Americorps
The core mission of AmeriCorps Teen Leadership & Career Corps (TLCC) is engaging and empowering students to transition into career and community life through a process of self-discovery, career exploration, and informed decision making. While our primary focus is working with students who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP), our mission does not preclude us from working with all students toward a more successful transition from high school to post secondary education or work. AmeriCorps members work with a minimum of 15 classified students per school site, either individually, ideally in small groups, or in small classes. Members may also work with students in an after school club format, during service learning activities, or in a Youth Leader Inc, program model. Each student is encouraged to make a personal portfolio which may culminate with the creation of an I-movie, PowerPoint presentation, or e-portfolio. The purpose of these items is for presentation at the individual student’s IEP meeting and represent supporting documentation for the student’s preference in post school goals relating to work, education, and when appropriate, independent living objectives. AmeriCorps members may also recruit business and community volunteers in order to support the core mission and goals. School systems are encouraged to team up with the State of Maine Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation which may include the Division for Blind and Visual Impairments, local job placement agencies, adult education and other community based programs that share the same vision and goals of helping young people maximize their resources and community network to accomplish their post-secondary education and work goals. There is a small financial obligation and in-kind contribution for school systems to meet in order to participate. TLCC members are working in nine different public school districts in Maine for the 2010–2011 school-years, but we are expanding and hope to provide service to a greater number of schools in the coming school-year.
