CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?
An up close and personal look at advocacy and communication skills is what you will receive when you attend this beyond-the-basics workshop. You've heard it all before: "I" messages, assertive vs. aggressive, body language, and more. But what are some of the feelings and driving motivators that are behind what is said and heard? How can you turn a difficult conversation into an amicable outcome? This workshop will take you on a journey of discovery as participants learn different aspects of how to be more effective with those we relate to by taking an in-depth look at how people interact.
GREAT MINDS DON'T THINK ALIKE!
But why don't they? Why are we all so different? Exploring
the world of learning styles and multiple intelligences (MI) is
a great way to gain an understanding of yourself and others. Through
inquiry and interaction, participants will not only learn about
their personal learning preferences, but will also discover ways
to put their style to work for them. If you have never participated
in a workshop on learning styles or multiple intelligences, you
won't want to miss this! If you have attended learning styles
or MI workshops before, join us again and see what new insights
you discover---about yourself and those around you.
NCLB & IDEIA 2004 & Students with Disabilities: What should you know?
The No Child Left Behind ACT has had a significant impact on changing the landscape of public schools. The IDEA, now the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, was reauthorized in December 2004. This workshop will focus on key elements of these two federal laws, significant changes and what this means for students with disabilities in Maine. An emphasis will be given to parental involvement, rights and responsibilities.
PET's & IEP's: TIPS, TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES
Have your ever seen a multi-purpose tool? It is a tool that comes in a variety of sizes and has a variety of attachments. One model might have a screwdriver, scissors and a bottle opener, while another model will have a corkscrew and nail clippers. Although they all share the same basic design and serve the same basic purpose, there are many different models. This is how it is with PET's and IEP's. They are all governed by the same regulations and yet they all look and feel different. What is your role in this process? How do you make sure your child has the 'right attachments' to achieve his or her desired educational outcomes? What are some strategies for making the most of the PET meeting? This workshop will cover the requirements of the regulations, frequently asked questions, and other essentials of PET's and IEP's. It is recommended that participants have a basic understanding of special education.
TRANSITION TO KINDERGARTEN: READY! SET! GO!
Participants will explore how transitions affect us all, from
the child entering kindergarten to the parent who is seeing their
child off to school. You may feel overwhelmed by all the information
you have on your child. Organizing that information will be instrumental
in how effective you are as a parent in the transition process.
Getting organized is one of the first steps for a smooth transition.
WHY CAN'T JOHNNY B. GOODE? CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS AND POSTIVIE SUPPORTS
Understanding why Johnny can't be good and how to build in supports that are positive is just one aspect of this workshop. When it comes to challenging behaviors, knowing about the past is necessary before you can change the future. You want to support your son, daughter or student in positive ways that will help him or her learn new skills and responses. But how do you do that? What works? What doesn't? Various strategies for teaching positive skills in the home, school and community will be explored as participants learn ways to create an environment for positive change.
